Greg and Steve welcomed Jennifer Shirkani, CEO of the Penumbra Group, to discuss the importance of a incorporating a strategic interviewing process when interviewing candidates. Jennifer talked about the difference between a traditional interview question and a behavioral based questions and why assessing emotional intelligence is so critical in matching the right candidate to the right position.

Greg and Steve welcomed Karen Storsteen from Performance by Design, who discussed the importance of applying intuition in the workplace. Then, using her psychic abilities, Karen provided intuitive guidance to Greg and Steve about the Ask Dr. Mac show and helped caller Michelle with her job search. Greg and Steve picked up where they left off from last week talking about the 360-feedback process for executive teams. Greg filled us in on the actual steps he used to facilitate the executive team he is working with in giving face-to-face, verbal feedback to each other. Steve Sorensen joined the Ask Dr. Mac show as Greg’s new co-host. Welcome Steve! 

The topic of the show was “How to Be a Star at Work,” based on the book by the same name written by Robert Kelley. Greg and Steve walked thru each of Kelley’s nine strategies for becoming a star while adding their own insights on the topic. They also addressed a Dear Dr. Mac letter sent to ask@askdrmac.com about a volunteer manager wanting advice on how to tactfully seek out deserved recognition for herself without coming across as a glory-seeker. The show ended on caller Casey’s question on how to best position himself for a promotion. 

Greg’s guest this week was Terry Ebert, business development consultant with Pinnacle Pathways terry@pinnaclepathways.org Greg and Terry addressed three Dear Dr. Mac letters sent to the show:

1. Older employee who was recently turned down for an upper management job wondering what his next move would be to get ahead.
2. A question on the validity of using personality tests to screen job applicants.

Greg opened the show by filling the listeners in on why the show, his website, and his latest management novel, are all called “Ask Dr. Mac”. He then introduced his guest, Susan Owens, susan@owens.org , a human resource consultant, and they explored the topic of job interviews (from both the employers and prospective employees’ perspective).

Judith and Greg wrapped up the show by sharing their responses to some of the questions from Greg’s book.

In their debut show, Dr. Mac and Judith talked about Taylor Clark’s article in Psychology Today, “The 8 ? Laws of Rumor Spread”. In the article review, they discussed how rumors develop, how they spread, and why they spread. Dr. Mac then talked about the damage that rumors can cause in the workplace and what management needs to do in order to curb this from happening. Judith ended the show with a discussion on what a coworker should do if their fellow coworker is not doing their part in meeting deadlines and getting their work done. She gave an example of how to confront such a coworker and what to say.
