Her Society

GINNI HETTIHEWA

Ginni Hettihewa

Born in Colombo, Sri Lanka - Ginni Hettihewa migrated to Australia with her family at only 2 years of age. Unimpressed with her family's lack of seeking her consultation prior to leaving Sri Lanka, in rebellion, she drew on her Aunt's wall when arriving in Melbourne. So naturally, this move ignited Ginni's path to creative opportunity.

Ginni started out as a quiet, studious and reclusive girl from her primary to early high school years. It was not until ninth grade where she met her best friend, the mischievous Antonette Gaffney who was quite the polar opposite of Ginni that her extravert personality started to develop and quiet exterior diminished rather quickly. After finishing high school, Ginni co-founded, "Clash/50 Productions," an independent theatre company that produced three productions (two of which had sold out seasons) - to which she had the role of Artistic Director, Writer and Actress.
It was in the third year of university that Ginni stumbled across a radio course at a little station in Coventry Street South Melbourne called JOY 94.9. Even though she possessed a knack for public speaking with her strong performing arts background, Ginni shyed away from on air announcing as coming to terms with her sexuality on the airwaves of Australia’s largest and only LGBT media broadcaster was a little overwhelming.

“I was a bit shy coming to JOY as I was at that cusp where I hadn’t quite come out yet,” she says. “I guess it was about putting myself in a situation where I would have to become more comfortable with who I am. I actually said I would do anything but be on air, but the program manager at the time put me on an 11pm slot and from there it kind of blossomed. Now they can’t get rid of me.”

Since then, Ginni has featured on an array of programming – from Drive to Breakfast on the popular show The Hump Day Crew generating entertaining programming through inviting an exceptional GLBTIQ A-List Guest List! It was on a holiday in the US in 2011 that inspired the concept of the Her Society radio show with current co host, Natalie Zibung.
"I think it's time we had a show for women in our community that steers away from political aspects. We need a lighter show for women thats simply more about friendship, positivity and pop culture. So if you're a girl and you love girls.....you'll like our show. If you don't....you'll like the universal themes in our show.

Concurenttly to her hosting duties at JOY, Ginni is a regulat MC at the largest events across Australia – Midsumma, Lick and Pinkalicious across Melbourne, Sydney and the Australian Eastern Seaboard. A compassionate individual, Ginni is not afraid to provide a voice to minority groups. Her passion lies in working with like minded community groups and figures in an attenpt to inspire change and positivity through education and cultivating a broader perception. She is known for her charisma, wit and bubbly energy.
