Greg Cooper, “Coop” of “High School Football with Coop and Paul”, began his coaching career in 1993 at Shabazz High School in Newark, NJ he coached there for one season serving as linebackers coach. Having been an avid baseball player he decided that he would give the major leagues a try and with the assistance of his high school teammate Doug Glanville (ESPN) he was given a tryout with the Chicago Cubs minor league franchise. From this he then received several other tryouts with the Chicago White Sox’s and St. Louis Cardinals.
After a failed baseball endeavor Greg returned to the one sport that he has loved since he was a kid football. During his brief tenure at Shabazz High School where he meet the late Marc McCombs and they forged a friendship the centered around their love of the game and passion for coaching. In 1998 Marc was named head coach at Columbia High School, in South Orange/Maplewood NJ, he reached out to Greg and asked him to serve as his head freshman coach in his plan to build Columbia into a respected program.
Greg served as head freshman coach in 2000 and 2001. Greg was promoted to defensive line coach in 2002 where he served in that capacity until 2005. During his time at Columbia he also served as defensive coordinator (2004), assistant head coach (2004) and recruiting coordinator (2003 – 2004). He has helped several students realize their dreams to play in college from the FBS and FCS divisions to the HBCU divisions. He has helped athletes obtain scholarships to Rutgers University and the University of Virginia, Hofstra University, Bucknell, Lincoln and Chaney University.
Greg has a passion for football at all levels, he is currently serving as a volunteer coach in Hopatcong, NJ but high school and college football is where his love is. He has wanted to do something that would highlight the great football players that New Jersey has and continues to produce, and doing “High School Football with Coop and Paul” has allowed him to continue that passion.
